Jay Ahr Kitenge Print x RIOT
Kelly Pochette, 20 cm, Purple Calf Soft Leather - 20 x 14 x 7 cm
Yarn Embroidery by Jay Ahr
Influences: Textiles from East Africa
The Riot Kelly Pochette is inspired by the East African Kitenge or Chitenge produced in Tanzania and other regions of East Africa.
Weaving is of great importance in many African cultures. The Dogon, for example, believe that spinning and weaving thread can be likened to human reproduction and the notion of rebirth. The Kitenge is a fabric similar to a sarong. Kitenges are colourful pieces of fabric represented on the bag in one of the more brighter colour palettes of the collection. In the Coastal area of Kenya, and in Tanzania, Kitenges often have Swahili sayings written on them. This inspired the hidden Riot bubbling below the surface of the print. Often decorated with a huge variety of colors, patterns and even political slogans the Riot motif pays homage to these.
The designs are symbolic, a large variety of religious and political designs are found as well as traditional tribal patterns.
Kitenges can be used on occasions and in many ways either symbolically or for practical reasons. Kitenges are used in different settings to convey messages. Riot is one of those, a nod to the post-election and religious riots that plague the nations that bore the artwork. Kitenges can be framed or otherwise hung up on the wall as a decorative batik artwork. Equally the Kelly Pochette is a practical everyday object transformed into an artwork in its own right.
These prints have become very popular as fashion statements in urban pop culture with youth in Africa. The Pochette nods to this inclusion of Kitenges being incorporated in clothing such as hoodies, and accessories such as bags. Hence the Kelly Constance being the perfect platform to convey this evocative message. The collection constantly juxtaposing the old and the new yet always emanating the zeitgeist of its own time.
