Tie Dye X Psycho
Constance Bag, 24 cm, Black Calf Box Leather - 24 x 15 x 5 cm Provenance: America
Yarn Embroidery by Jay Ahr
Influences: 1960s. Americana. Tie Dye culture. Cult Classic film.
The Hermès Constance Psycho is a stunning yet unsettling clash of Americana. Riss has put in stark contrast conflicting themes of the 1960s. Tie dye culture, a symbol of non-violence sported by hippies protesting the Vietnam war and the full on horror of the macabre cult classic that is the film Psycho.
Risqué and taboo-breaking, it quickly became, and remains, the most notorious title in the substantial Hitchcock canon, a singular masterpiece that still has the power to enthrall and appall. He regarded it as a wicked joke, a "fairytale of awfulness”. The famous shower scene, a tour de force of montage, illusion and shrieking violins, runs for less than two minutes and yet looms fearfully large in the collective memory.
The suspense and fear of the graphic Psycho emerges towards us from the psychedelic embroidered beauty of the tie dye motif.
The term “tie-dye” first appeared in the United States during the 1960’s. Hippies, who were protesting the Vietnam War and promoting peace and love, began wearing clothing with vibrant colors and psychedelic designs. Tie-Dye T-Shirts and dresses were a symbol of non-violence and their popularity quickly spread among America’s youth. If you wore tie dye you stood for something.
One can imagine how the design and colors of these shirts stood out in the 1960’s amongst all the bland conservative clothing looks of the time. Those represented in the intentionally black-and-white film Psycho (Hitchcock believing it would be too gory in colour). The white stitching of Psycho on the black calf box leather stands veiled but ominous beneath the vibrant psychedelic embroidery of the tie dye.
