Shunga x TRBL Kelly Bag, 28cm,RedCalfBoxLeather-28x20x10cm
Provenance: Japan Grade: Distressed Yarn Embroidery by Jay Ahr Hermès, 1996
Influences: Shunga from the Edo period, Japan.
One unique piece in a series of 18 acts inspired by Shunga (a Japanese term for erotic art), this motif returns in all its glory in both its censored and uncensored forms. In combination with the graphic TRBL from the “word paintings” of Christopher Wool, a reference to the naughty nature of this ancient erotic art. Jay Ahr uses language as a censorship technique overlaying these antique Japanese characters caught in flagrante. The modern composition explores the intersection between signage and language, pattern and form.
Sustainability: An array of pristine condition pre-loved Hermès bags presents the perfect canvas for this ancient yet modern artwork making every piece sustainable in product and process. Marrying beautifully crafted collection pieces with sustainable business practices from the sourcing of the bags to the hand stitched yarn embroidery.
